This easy beginner hat knitting pattern is an excellent project for anyone who is learning how to knit.

Materials

  • 1 skein of yarn suitable for size 6mm (US 10) needles.
  • (I used Classic Alize Lanagold in grey -21 - 49% wool/51% acrylic)
  • A good substitute for this yarn is - Lion Brand Heartland.
  • Worsted or aran.

Tools

  • Set of 6mm (US 10) 16″ circulars
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors
  • Darning needle
  • Tape measure

Instructions

  1. CO 88 sts
  2. Place a marker, then join in the round being careful not to twist the sts
  3. Round 1 – K2, P2 – rep to the end of the round.
  4. Rep round 1 until the hat measures 8.5″.
  5. Depending on how the hat fits your head, you may want to make this a bit longer – 9″ or more.

Shape The Crown

  1. K2, P2tog – rep to the end of the round.
  2. K2, P1 – rep to the end of the round.
  3. K2tog, P1 – rep to the end of the round.
  4. K1, P1 – rep to the end of the round.
  5. K2tog – rep to the end of the round.
  6. K2tog – rep to the end of the round.
  7. Cut a length of yarn and thread through the darning needle, pick up the stitches left on the needles and sew tightly together.
  8. Sew in any loose ends.
