Bright Flower Tea Cosy Free Knitting Pattern


A simple tea cosy which is quick and easy to knit, this includes making knitted flowers and leaves for decoration. This tea cosy can be made in any colour combinations you can think of, the louder the better! 


2 x John Lewis merino blend chunky 50g (in your own colour choice

2 x DK yarn in your colour choice for flowers

1 x DK yarn in green for the leaves

Knitting Needles: 5.5 mm (US 9) and 4mm (US 6)

Tea Cosy Knitting Pattern

Using 5.5mm (US 9) needles and your yarn choice cast on 31sts.

Work in st st for 12 rows.

Work the two fronts following the same pattern.

Make 2 pieces

Row 1: k1, *k2tog, k8; rep from * to end (28sts)

Rows 2-4: st st

Row 5: k1, *k2tog, k7; rep from * to end (25sts)

Rows 6-8: st st

Row 9: k1, *k2tog, k6; rep from * to end (22sts)

Row 10: purl

Row 11:k1, *k2tog, k5; rep from * to end (19sts)

Row 12: purl

Row 13: k1, *k2tog, k4; rep from * to end (16sts)

Row 14: purl

Row 15:k1, *k2tog, k3; rep from *to end (13sts)

Row 16: purl

Row 17:k1, *k2tog, k2; rep from * to end (10sts)

Row 18: *p1, k2tog; rep from * to last st, p1 (7sts)

Row 19:k1, k2tog 3 times (4sts)

Row 20: p1, (purl into the front and back of the next st) twice, p1 (6sts)

Row 21: knit into the front and back of every stitch (12sts)

Row 22: purl

Cast off


Making up

Sew each front together at the top and bottom of the sides leaving holes for the spout and the handle.


With your 4mm (US 6) knitting needles and double knit yarn cast on 20 sts (Leave a tail of 8 inches)

Row 1 and each alternate row – Purl

Row 2: Increase knit wise into each stitch.

Row 4: *K1, increase into next stitch*, repeat * to * to end.

Row 6: *K2, increase into next stitch*, repeat *to* to end.

Row 8: *K3, increase into next stitch*, repeat *to* to end.

Row 9: Purl

Row 10: Cast off Knit wise

Curl your flower inwards and secure by stitching loose cast off end through the bottom. Leave a tail, long enough to sew onto the top of the tea cosy.


Using 4mm (US 6) knitting needles and double knit yarn (in green) cast on 3 sts

1.   K1, M1, K1, M1, K1

2.   Purl

3.   K2, M1, K1, M1, K2

4.   Purl

5.   K3, M1, K1, M1, K3

6.   Purl

7.   K4, M1, K1, M1, K4

8.   Purl

9.   K5, M1, K1, M1, K5

10.  Purl

11. K6, M1, K1, M1, K6

12. Purl

13. K2TOG, K1, K2TOG, K8, K2TOG

14. Purl

15. K2TOG, K1, K2TOG, K5, K2TOG

16. Purl

17. K2TOG, K1, K2TOG, K2, K2TOG

18. Purl

19. K2TOG, K2, K2TOG

20. Purl

21. K2TOG, K2TOG

22. P2TOG

23. Fasten off.

Make 6 or however many you want to decorate.

Making up

Stitch the flowers and the leaves into place around the top funnel of the tea cosy. Arrange the flowers how you want them to look and secure into place.


K – knit

P – purl

P2tog – purl 2 stitches together

Sts – stitches

Garter stitch – every row knit

K2tog – knit 2 stitches together

SKPO – slip one stitch, knit one stitch, pass slipped stitch over knit stitch.

M1 – make one stitch
